Joanie Gerken has worked in the field of learning disabilities for over 30 years, teachiing math and reading
to students with learning disabilities, as well as teaching graduate level courses and seminars on multisensory teaching strategies
and the Orton-Gillingham approach. She is a fellow in the Orton-Gillingham Academy and has been teaching at Trident
Academy in Mount Pleasant, and is also a teaching fellow with the Rankin Institute at the Fletcher School in Charlotte,
NC. She did her undergraduate studies at Clemson University, home of the Fighting Tigers! She received her Masters in
Special Education from the University of Charleston. She has four beautiful children, all of whom have survived learning
differences, and now have jobs and families of their own!
